The Roots: Last Bastion of Strength in a Dying Hip Hop World
As the the months pass and I look to the upcoming releases. I feel a small sense of despair when I realize that there is nothing interesting on the horizon. It seems that, with the exeption of a few, most artists nowadays are giving in to the formulaic production process. It’s like they dont’ feel compelled to try something new. Whether its a different subject matter in their lyrics. Or working with a variety of different producers rather than the one who got them that hit single on the last album.
And this is where I love The Roots. From the start, they have evolved almost every album they’ve put out. Tried something new, whether you loved it or hated it. They always bring something fresh to the table. That, coupled with their extremely strong live shows (seriously, if you haven’t been to one, do yourself a favor). And you have one of the best groups in hip hop history.
Above is a possible track of their newest album titled ‘Rising Down’, set to be released next month. Give it a listen. Bonafide head nodder.
