Thoughtless Thoughts

I’m here at work. Bored out of my mind as seems to be the case lately. You’d think that working in the video game industry would be exciting. Constantly swarmed with things to do. But thats not the case right now. All I do is playtest, playtest, playtest. One side effect of all this new found mental free time, is that I get to think. A lot. I’ll save you from the more convoluted inner monologues. But one thing that jumps up more often than not, is the state of the underground hip hop scene.

Unlike its watered down, forumlaic, older brother. The underground scene is pretty diverse. You can get pretty much anything you want there. Its a veritable buffet of styles and concepts. Believe you me, I partake on a regular basis.

One unfortunate aspect is that you are sometimes, unfairly, judged on what you listen to. You happen to be into the harder, more thuggish type of thing. You’re a wannabe who couldn’t hack it in real life. You like the more “emo” type stuff (Atmosphere, El-P), you tend to hear (oh you’re one of those, whatever that means). Like your lyrics and beats to be on point, and thought provoking. You gotta be a “backpacker”. And this list goes on and on and on. It gets quite frustrating at times. Can’t a person just listen to some dope shit without gaining some pre-existing badge that they may not want?
